Humorous character Essay

From this point forward, Shakespeare chooses to expand Bottom’s appearance of strangeness much further by changing his head into a donkey’s head, which, as indicated by the story, is the consequence of the pixie, Puck’s effort. After that little episode, Bottom’s mates begin to escape in tension. Base is clearly confounded why his amigos are fleeing from him, since he doesn’t realize that his head has been supplanted by a jackass head. While doing this, Shakespeare utilizes the sensational incongruity method again to expand the diversion for this scene considerably more. †The crowd knows about the ass head, yet Bottom isn't †He’s striding around everywhere throughout the stage, befuddled why his mates fled from him, yet his pretentious disposition isn't completely gone at this point, so as opposed to asking them, why they’re fleeing from him, he decides to accept, they’re simply messing about with him. So when they’re all fleeing in tension, he yells, that he’ll not fear their little joke. Base simply need to keep his pride, whatever it takes to do as such. Thus, he arbitrarily begins to sing about winged animals. †Which after my supposition is a very strange activity just unexpectedly. Incredibly, he’s caught by Titania, the pixie sovereign, who Puck has additionally played with, to make her experience passionate feelings for the primary animal she put her focus on. This animal ends up being Bottom the weaver. She hears his tune and falls frantically infatuated with him. †It is hilarious that the high class pixie sovereign, maybe a wonder past everything else, begins to look all starry eyed at a low class fellow, whose head has a similar figure as the leader of a creature, which is no doubt thought about one of the most unintelligent and difficult warm blooded animals on the planet. (I wager Shakespeare considered when he was composing the play). This is unmistakably indicated when they’re talking. Titania says something like: â€Å"Be kind and obliging to this gentleman†¦ † and she about makes an entire sonnet out of her discourse, with loads of long wonderful words. Base will react with something that he think himself is a humorous joke; ‘well-thought’ and ‘intellectual’ †Not exactly, however Bottom doesn’t know, in light of the fact that he’s still got his pretentious mentality. Shakespeare had definitely been pondering the names of the pixies, that Bottom was going to meet when Titania had persuaded him to go with her, since he needed to make Bottom think of a joke for each and everybody of them †A genuinely awful joke obviously. Shakespeare realized that Bottom despite everything had this vainglorious disposition going on, however he likewise realized that Bottom was a to some degree dumb character. It requires a specific degree of knowledge to think of good jokes, which will make audience members chuckle or if nothing else produce a touch of laughing. †But Bottom doesn’t have that insight. What makes Bottom amusing isn't his jokes, yet his conviction that his jokes are acceptable and the measure of time he’s spend causing them to up.

Murder on a Sunday Morning Essay Sample

Murder on a Sunday Morning Essay Sample Murder on a Sunday Morning Analysis ‘Murder on a Sunday Morning‘ is a French documentary film based on a real life incident which happened in 2000 in Jacksonville, Florida. The film directed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade brilliantly depicts the Brenton Butler case, when an innocent black American 15-year old boy was falsely accused of the murder he never committed. The film shows how the Butler defense team Patrick McGuinness and Ann Finnell, lawyers from the Public Defender’s Office, build their case for their defendant’s innocence and prove prejudice and incompetence on the part of the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. Here is a short ‘Murder on a Sunday Morning’ summary and analysis. Summary The plot of this Oscar-winning documentary originated from the incident of Mary Ann Stephens, a 65-year old tourist from Georgia who was shot dead before her husbands very eyes by a black assailant on May 7, 2000. The killer fled with Mrs. Stephens purse. Ninety minutes later, the police arrested and charged with the murder the first convenient black culprit available. It was a black African American teenager, Brendon Butler, a student at Englewood High School, who was on his way to a job interview a local Blockbuster Video outlet. The police brought Butler to the victim’s husband and Mr. Stephens identified and publicly proclaimed the teen as the killer, although he had only caught a glimpse of the real culprit. Butler was taken to the police station. The boy was denied the right to make his phone call and inform his parents or contact a lawyer. The police officers seemed to be utterly convinced of Butler’s being guilty, but they had no solid evidence against him, except the sole eyewitness to the crime. The police interrogated Butler for twelve hours and persuaded him forcefully to sign a false confession where he admitted having committed the murder. He was forced to sign a timeline of events which were written for him by Detective Williams. For investigators, the media and the public opinion, Brenton Butler was just another messed-up youth and they were ready to sentence him in advance. But a public defender, Pat McGuinness, however, takes up the case and defends Brendon Butler. He starts a battle to restore Butler’s rights and the story of Brenton ceases to be so ordinary. The case goes from being an ordinary murder investigation to an obvious miscarriage of justice. In the court, the boy testifies that the detectives Williams, Glover and Darnell, involved in the murder investigation, had threatened, tortured psychologically, and physically abused him to make him confess. Brenton proclaims his innocence. Patrick McGuinness and Ann Finnell supply a photo where the teen has multiple bruises on his thorax and face. The attorneys claim it was a result of the interrogation. The boy tells that the investigators beat him up to force a confession out of him. One of the detectives was Michael Glover, son of the then current Sheriff of Jacksonville Nat Glover, and Benton testifies that Glover hit the hardest. Analysis The film looks like a document of the legal process around Brenton Butler’s case that goes on to prove that Butler is innocent and indict Jacksonville police officers for a serious miscarriage of justice. Lestrade uses a chronological approach to the material and goes through all the stages of the trial. Besides, the viewers are shown the Butlers family home, the community, and the local church which the Butlers attend. The filmmakers detail the trial process from the point of view of the defense and show how a good defense lawyer shapes the evidence to reveal the hidden truth. The film has also a post-script that provides further information regarding the case. After Butlers acquittal, McGuinness’s office provided the police with the relevant information that helped catch the real killers, Juan Curtis and Jermel Williams. The film conveys two very important messages. First, it reveals the imperfections of the US criminal justice system. Secondly, the film depicts the dedication and skills of public defenders Pat McGuinness and Ann Finnell who are typical representatives of court-appointed lawyers. They are the first line of defense in the United States against the wrongful conviction of the innocent.

The Character Of Bully In The Clay Marble By Minfong Ho

In the book ‘The Clay Marble’ written by Minfong Ho, several interesting characters are introduced. Although Chnay is a minor character in the story he has an important role to play. The complex nature of this character changes greatly from beginning to end, giving the reader much to think about as the story unfolds. In the beginning he is portrayed as a bully to the young children inside the Cambodian refugee camp, destroying the artwork they would make out of clay. Later in the story he becomes aligned with the main character, Dara, and helps her on her journey through the wilderness to find her family. Eventually throughout the story the author develops Chnay into a helpful child rather than a destructible one, helping the young girl†¦show more content†¦Though he tries hard to hide it, his innate goodness shows through his tough exterior. Chnay is also a dynamic character due to the transformation of his attitude and personality. In the beginning he is this mean and ferocious child, bullying other children who are minding their own business. The children fear Chnay because when he first appears, he has fire ants running up and down his arm, biting him. He tells them that it doesn’t harm him, which makes them even more fearful of him (p. 30). Later, however, when the bombs are being dropped and Dara is separated from her family, he has a change of heart. He gives Dara information about where her family could be. When she asks him if he would like to accompany her, he surprisingly agrees (p. 57). We see further evidence of Chnay’s character later when he meets up with Dara and offers her his last bits of food. The author writes, â€Å"Chnay glanced at me, then rummaged in his pockets. He brought out a handful of cold rice wrapped in a a strip of banana leaf. ‘Here, take it,’ he said, squatting beside me† (p. 56). Although he puts up a front of being cruel and heartless, he actually does have feelings and sympathy for others. It is evident from this event that despite his tough guy persona, he dose crave friendship and acceptance from others. Chnay’s character traits also include leadership ability and resourcefulness. Without his help and guidance in the search for her

Order From Chaos Analyzing And Evaluating The Hellenic...

Order from Chaos: Analyzing and Evaluating the Hellenic Creation Myth through the Lens of Biblical Tradition Greek mythology is often understood through the lens of analyzing a dead religion; it is assumed that the influence of such myths is passive and fixed, only effecting the lives of those already long gone, whereas the very nature of such myths is to be active, dynamic, and illuminative. I, like many others with Greek heritage, rarely engage actively with the ancient Hellenic myths. Despite this, it is valuable to understand their place in the broader western culture as a counterpoint to the now ubiquitous Biblical narrative of creation. While attempting to achieve the same goals of revealing the natural world and the nature of man, the two traditions show drastically different perspectives on the nature of the divine. While the creation myth found in Genesis stressed the ordered creation of the world, the Greek tradition is inherently chaotic. The myth begins with the god Chaos, himself, living for centuries alone in the void until he â€Å"grew tired of living alone† and created the goddess Earth and the underworld of Tartarus (Stephanides). Through this segment alone, it is clear the divergence of perspective within the traditions. Whereas in the Biblical myth, God creates only what is good and evilness comes later through only corruption of God’s creation, in the Greek tradition there is a clear understanding of good and evil being a direct duality of each other.

Social Stratification Free Essays

Question: What are the causes of social stratification in the Caribbean? Throughout our lives, there must have been some form of categorization whether your complexion or financial status. Even in today’s society, people are judged and put into groups based on their race or even sometimes religion. This is known as Social Stratification. We will write a custom essay sample on Social Stratification or any similar topic only for you Order Now This however could not be possible without a diversed Caribbean that is present today. Cultural Diversity then speaks about the different ethnic traditions such as custom, race and language that are found in the society. Take for example Jamaica that has a motto â€Å"Out of Many One People†. This can be seen as a perfect example as many different races or ethnic groups reside in Jamaica and widely the Caribbean. As a result, a means of Social Stratification takes place in the society. Mohammad (2007) states that it is a ranking system which organizes or places persons in the society in a hierarchy. In addition, it can be classified as a characteristic of society as it appears to be present in most of our Caribbean islands. Although this is viewed as a form of inequality, the system was derived from events that took place some years ago. The main causes of social stratification are the Plantation System, Emancipation and Social Mobility. Historically, this system started on the fields of the sugar plantation. The persons who toiled in the hot sun in the fields were known as slaves and were viewed as the â€Å"lesser people†. Their masters however were the opposite as they had all the power and wealth so they were seen as more highly and respectable individuals. A distinction between them had begun as the gap between them had gotten bigger due to the mobility of the masters. A hierarchy was built and the slaves could be seen at the bottom due to the bias judgment of the pigment of their skin. During this period of history according to Greenwood (2003), a middle class was also developed owning to the fact that not all persons were classified as slaves or whites. Therefore a middle class was now a part of the hierarchy and they were called the mulattos. These sets of people were still judged on the colour of their skin and the materialistic things that they owned. This brought much segregation and division among them because of the differing cultures and the whites believing that they were better than others around them. Emancipation which took place years after the Plantation System with the slaves also helped with Social stratification that most Caribbean islands are experiencing now. Emancipation is the period in history when many of the African slaves got freed. Despite the fact that freeing the slaves was indeed an advantage to them, it brought a negative effect. With freedom came the advantage of schooling and getting educated, however not many persons were able to go forward with it. There was a division among the Blacks or the ex-slaves as only the better ones were able to get the chance to be taught. When this took place, many of the ex-slaves felt that they were lesser than even their own race or group and so there was categorizing present as even the whites were then divided into two groups, the Petite and the Blancs. This caused much hatred among them as social status made them feel as though they were superior to others. With the use of the hierarchy, there must have been some movement of persons whether up or down the ranking of the social ladder. This is known as social mobility; which even in today’s society it is taking place. It is even taking place as we speak. Mohammed (2007) states â€Å"Education is the primary means of accessing social mobility throughout the region† (p. 65). It is through education that most of the Caribbean leaders rise to such high authority or positions. Even in today’s society, it is the persons who are wealthy and are of light complexion that gets recognition for jobs and positions. Everyone else who falls below that, is classified as poor and is in the lower class on the hierarchy. Weber argues that social class is primarily based on power, prestige or status. In conclusion it can be said that social stratification all started from the days of slavery and even nowadays persons are still being ranked on race, colour, sex, religion and finance. Nostradamus Essays (1000 words) - Apocalypticists, Divination

Nostradamus In Regards to Women Physician and prophet Michel de Nostradame lived in the first part of the sixteenth century. To understand these prophecies one must first understand the position of women in the sixteenth century. During the sixteenth century there was very little a woman could do. Men dominated most aspects of women's social, political, and religious lives. Women were treated as if they were inferior to men. They were treated like possessions. In religion the Catholic Church was the dominant force in the Renaissance. The Church was, of course, run by the Pope, a man. Women were burned as witches "for ?crimes' that could be as minor as a local act of feminine healing, or even the choice made by a single woman to live alone (9)." The Reformation brought no relief for women. In fact the Protestant Reformation may have actually harmed women. Catholic leaders took it upon themselves to start Inquisitions in France, Italy, and most notably, Spain. Any kind of deviant behavior could be defined as a crime during this time. Women were considered "flawed" to begin with? They not only used their sexuality to entice men from the path of God but they also were the daughters of Eve, the originator of sin. Also many passages in the Bible were mistranslated to be anti-women. Some believe that this"mistranslation" was a deliberate attempt by the Catholic Church to keep the society male dominated. Michel de Nostradame was born in 1503 in St. Remy, Provence, France. His family were originally Jewish until they converted to avoid persecution from the Catholics. Although they converted, they, along with many other Christian "converts", were viewed with suspicion. From early childhood Nostradamus was exposed to "pagan" studies of the occult, alchemy, and astrology. He understood that he had to be careful because the Catholic Church didn't approve of these studies. He studied to be a doctor at the University of Montpellier. After he was done with his studies he decided to try to find a cure to the dreaded bubonic plague that continually swept across France. This may have been of interest to him because of the early death of his first wife, who is thought to have died in one such wave. While he didn't cure the bubonic plague, he did further medicine with the discovery of natural remedies such "as dried and crushed rose petals in capsules placed under the tongue of the sufferer to release Vitamin C into the blood (15)." He wrote a collection of "prophetic rhymed quatrains, written between 1555 and 1558 (15)" called Centuries. Nostradamus predicted the rise and fall of modern Communism and other key events in the future including the twentieth century. He named some individuals such as Napoleon and Hitler. But the real subject of the paper would have to be how Nostradamus predicted the change of circumstance for women. Many of Nostradamus' "prophecies are obscurely written and heavily camouflaged with ancient languages, strange references to contemporary events, which act as metaphors for future significance, as well as anagrams (16)." This was mostly done to avoid detection in his own lifetime and probably to sound more profound. "New law to occupy the new land Towards Syria, Judea, and Palestine: The great barbarian empire of men to decay, Before the Moon completes its cycle (47)." -Century 3:97 It is told to us in the book "Nostradamus- Prophecies for Women" that the term "new land" refers to the Americas. The"new law" can be related to the "barbarian empire of men" as that it could represent that men will have a different place in the Americas. The moon's cycle can be construed to have a "feminine" connection. Phrased a bit more simply: The Americas could be a source of a lunar rising of consciousness at a time when the male dominated religion and law is at its all time peak. The rule of men will start to crumble before the evolution of woman is complete. Nostradamus also predicted that democracy would replace the autocracies of his time. He also thought that women would start to slowly take their place in these new democracies and that would influence a new order. These women would change the laws to be more equal in gender. "With a name so timid will she be brought forth That the three sisters will have the name of destiny: Then she will lead a great people by tongue and deed, More than any other will she have fame and renown (75)." -Century 1:76 During Nostradamus' time until the earlier part

For most of its early history, Finland was associated with the Kingdom of Sweden. This began in 1154 when Swedens King Eric introduced Christianity in Finland. As a result of Finland becoming a part of Sweden in the 12th century, Swedish became the regions official language. By the 19th century, however, Finnish again became the national language. In 1809, Finland was conquered by Czar Alexander I of Russia and became an independent grand duchy of the Russian Empire until 1917. On December 6th of that year, Finland declared its independence. In 1918 a civil war took place in the country. During World War II, Finland fought the Soviet Union from 1939 to 1940 (The Winter War) and again from 1941 to 1944 (The Continuation War). From 1944 to 1945, Finland fought against Germany. In 1947 and 1948 Finland and the Soviet Union signed a treaty that resulted in Finland making territorial concessions to the USSR. Following the end of World War II, Finland grew in population but in the 1980s and early 1990s it began to have economic problems. In 1994 Martti Ahtisaari was elected as president and he began a campaign to revitalize the countrys economy. In 1995 Finland joined the European Union and in 2000 Tarja Halonen was elected as Finland and Europes first female president and prime minister. In addition, agriculture plays a small role in Finlands economy. This is because the countrys high latitude means that it has a short growing season in all but its southern areas. The main agriculture products of Finland are barley, wheat, sugar beets, potatoes, dairy cattle, and fish. Geography and Climate Finland is located in Northern Europe along the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland. It shares borders with Norway, Sweden and Russia and has a coastline of 776 miles (1,250 km). The topography of Finland is relatively gentle with low, flat or rolling plains and low hills. The land is also dotted with many lakes, over 60,000 of them, and the highest point in the country is Haltiatunturi at 4,357 feet (1,328 m). The climate of Finland is considered cold temperate and subarctic in its far northern areas. Most of Finlands climate is moderated by the North Atlantic Current, however. Popularity or Education :: Philosophy of Teaching Statement

Popularity or Education As a college student you run into a few conflicts. One of the most common of these is between education, and being socially accepted. These two statuses conflict almost every hour of the day. Should I go out and drink tonight even though I have an eight o’clock class? All my friends are going to Kansas City this afternoon, and I have a class. Which should I do? These are just a few of the dilemmas a normal college student runs into. I for one was out until two o’clock in the morning the night I decided to write this paper, so I know what I’m talking about. Being a college student takes a lot of your time. Classes and studying correctly leaves little time for anything else. The average student takes about fourteen hours a week, and should probably study that same amount of time to be completely prepared. If this were done all in one day it would be acceptable. Unfortunately, classes are spread throughout the week, and studying fills the hours in between. This however is not feasible for someone having the time of their life with their peers. I have not researched the average college student on their social lives, but I can relate my own experiences. Most of the time college students have to work in order to go to school, or just live on their own. Work hours vary with each person, from eight hours a week to forty hours a week, but they also take a substantial amount of free time from a college student. This, along with classes, study time, sleeping, and eating time, leaves little or no time to make friends, or even keep them. But young adults thrive on social interaction, so therefore a struggle is bound to happen. To become socially accepted requires many things. First you must have time to mingle. This is done in many social settings, such as bars, parties, dorm rooms, and sport events. Once at these events, you must keep up interesting conversations, partake in activities, and meet new people. Once these connections have been made, they do require some upkeep. You cannot expect a good friendship to come from occasional conversations. A good friend is made by time spent together. During this time connections are made. Human factors in technology Essay

Man is the only being who has utilized technology, to the point that it also caused technology to change rapidly through time. Technology has been one of the most influential concepts in the lives of every human being throughout history. It was so influential that it had become one of the major deciding factors in the direction of history. Technological innovations had evolved from the simple to the very complex. From the simple stone cutting tools that prehistoric man had, to the contemporary blades that virtually do not need any resharpening at all. There had also been evolution from the very crude computing technique such as the finger counting, to the very complex supercomputers. In terms of transportation, from the very simple mode of walking and running, man had innovated transportation technology by inventing and innovating cars, planes, ships, etc. Technology had not only affected transportation and computing, but also the social and psychological scene as well. Companies whose general trade is information and technology are the ones whose organizational structure is very much affected by the technological changes. Most of the companies are either computer manufacturers or technological research companies. Apple Inc. , formerly known as Apple Computer, Inc. is an American-based multinational corporation which has its focus on technical manufacturing and designing of electronics and software programs for variations of consumers all around the world. It headquarters can be found in Cupertino, California (Apple, Inc. , 2007; History of Apple, 2007; Mesa, 1998; Apple. com, 2007). This company basically focuses on the development and support of several electronic gadgets for the market. This same company currently has its eyes focused on the innovation of already existing technologies, as well as the formation of a new breed of technology for the market. Some of its world-famous creations are the iPod, iPhone and the AppleTV. Aside from these electronic equipment and gadgets, the Apple, Inc. is also into the creation of new and better software programs. In the past, it had focused on creating and developing operating systems (OS), and specific application programs. Today, Apple, Inc. is now setting the path before it releases its newest operating system, the Mac OS X â€Å"Leopard†. Apple is very much into expanding its frontiers by exploring new ways of marketing and product presentation (Apple, Inc. , 2007; History of Apple, 2007; Mesa, 1998; Apple. com, 2007). It is now into the trend of having an online store where its products, whether hardware or software, can be bought by just a click of the mouse. The company is well-known for their very user-friendly hardware as well as software. Their iPod series, as well as their iPhone, Macintosh series of personal computers and peripherals, iLife software suite, and the Mac OS are just some of their best-known software and hardware products. Also, the company is a major supplier of prosumer software products for specialized purposes such as the audio and film industry (Apple, Inc. , 2007; History of Apple, 2007; Mesa, 1998; Apple. com, 2007). The mentioned things about Apple, Inc. , set up a background for the contemporary company. Technology has an implicit message, and that is to put everything into a very objective perspective, where everything could and should not be subject to an individual’s / group’s personal judgments or beliefs. By virtue of technology, man was able to do things such as measurement and judgment without having biases. With the use of technology, organizations can track their development without having doubts if the people who assessed them were biased about the evaluation process. But this strength is also its weak point. Being very objective would mean that the assessment would be very strict, and it would be guided by certain sets of quantified measurements such as numbers and / or a set of quantified codes. These standards for judgment and assessment can be used to evaluate employees’ activities, company sales and company economic standing. Having these strict standards would mean an easier, more efficient and more economic way of assessing the company. With these, companies such as the Apple could rely on machines about their company’s survival. Machines, which are products of modern technology, could be programmed to assess particular aspects of the company and suggest possible options about how to make the company even more productive. This may sound farfetched, but it could be a good way of looking at the possibility of how machines could help organizations in optimizing their parts. Business oriented companies such as the Apple is currently facing the possibilities of having less human members, and more help from the technology they are developing. These companies, with the help of modern technology, could be able to assess their employees using certain standards that can be input to a computer for further assessment. This way, there would be less processing time, less need for human HRD team members, less specialists in the field of assessing people, more possible members for the pool of computer and technology specialists (which could also mean more capital would be invested on the specialty of the company), and less expenses on the part of the company. Looking at the advantages posed by this method, it would be good to conclude that this could boost company income, thus uplift the lives of its employees in an economic and political sense. On the other hand, this method could also pose a very detrimental effect to the company as a whole, both in the macro and micro perspectives. One disadvantage of this method would be that without the subjective judgments of humans on human resources, it would be possible to miss important and potentially able applicants. Also, it would be possible that the programmed machines would not be able to look the implicit factors such as family background and the personality types of the applicants. Another is the fact that hardcore statistics, which programmed machines use, does not claim that the results are products of the interplay of all possible factors, instead it can only present results with the extraneous factors (which may possibly matter) omitted. Risk and Assets of the Former Implation of Sephora in China

RISK ASSETS OF THE FORMER IMPLANTATION OF SEPHORA IN CHINA With an annual turnover of around 2.5 billion euros, Sephora is a worldwide brand. Present in China since 2005, the company now has 135 stores in 47 cities. The brand has experienced a rapid development and do not stop there. The brand aims to open more new stores, particularly in the towns of 2nd and 3rd level. Indeed, cosmetic products in China are rapidly expanding. What were the risk and assets of an implantation in China? I - RISK 1. Cultural rigidities Traditionally, cosmetics, especially skincare and fragrances are reserved for women. Taking about caring of your body is not a major concern for men, especially in rural areas. However it develops in the cities†¦show more content†¦Health crises are indeed exogenous shocks having a significant impact on the turnover of luxury companies. In 2002, following the SARS outbreak, the company Richmont (n °2 worldwide luxury) saw its sales in East Asia and Southeast decrease over 8%. Indeed, in times of uncertainty, consumers buy less luxuries, and secondly, the SARS crisis has resulted in a drop in tourism in Asia, furthermore tourists are also privileged consumer products luxury because they have sufficient purchasing power and luxury products are comparatively cheaper in less developed Asian countries. Financial risks appear more threatening on the Chinese economy. Needless to say that a financial crisis would have serious consequences for the Chinese economy and mainly the market for luxury products especially as the banking sector is the only way to finance the economy in the absence of actually active financial markets (socialist economy requires). There are two major factors of uncertainty: the overheating of the Chinese economy and the problem of bad debts. These two phenomena are related, since it is the increase of credit (+30% on 2003), which partly financed growth. However, the domestic national debt is already very high (190 % of GDP) as the amount of bad debts (estimated 104% and 139 % of GDP) thus raising the risk of collapse of the entire system if the
